Green Peafowl

The breeding of Pheasants and Waterfowl has been originally started as a private hobby by businessman Fritz Geschke in Walsrode. From 1962, under the management of his daughter Uschi and her husband Wolf Brehm, this hobby quickly developed into a well-known attraction for nature and animal lovers worldwide and became an internationally highly respected Organisation for Breeding and bird conservation projects.

Highlights of the 60's to the 80's
Within the first six years, the area of the park had been doubled. Little by little, Mr. and Mrs. Brehm extended the parkland by adding more facilities. Some facilities featured global trend-setting qualities. At the end of the 60's the Tropical Greenhouse with the walk-in Paradise Hall had been completed. It was the first major investment and gained international attention. For the first time visitors could walk directly through the natural habitat of tropical birds and observe the flying treasures without being separated by a fence. The Free-Flying Hall was built only a couple of years later doubling the size of the new attraction. At that time there was nothing like it in the world.

From 1974 the Parrot House, Parakeet facility, Lory Atrium, the Park of
Roses with the Rosencafé on the hill and the historically reconstructed Windmill were built within a short period of time.

In the 80's the new facilities for Penguins, Birds of prey and Cassowaries followed.

Siberian Crane

90's until today
By the beginning of the 90's, the Crane facility was opened for its new inhabitants after a three-year construction period with a landscape covering 2,200 m². The new facility offered two Free-Flying aviaries and a large Nature Enclosure. In 1999 the prime minister of Lower Saxony at that time, Mr. Gerhard Schröder, inaugurated the at that time biggest single investment of Weltvogelpark Walsrode which enjoyed substantial public interest: the Tropical Forest Hall of Indonesia.

The new millennium brought along numerous innovations for our visitors as well. Starting with the Open-Air stage for daily flight shows followed by the Baby Bird Station and the Water-Playground for our little guests. Weltvogelpark Walsrode has continuously expanded its many attractions.

Just as Weltvogelpark was created by the joy in the versatility of bird life, it seeks to remain a place where visitors can enjoy the beauty of nature and its creatures in almost forgotten harmony.
